The Creative Monster: Franc’n Stein Cabernet Franc 2024

The Franc’n Stein Cabernet Franc 2024 is a thrilling new creation from Post House Wines that beautifully marries literary history with artisanal winemaking. The wine’s striking name pays homage to the iconic Mary Shelley stamp, commemorating the author who famously penned Frankenstein in 1816 at just 19 years old. Born from a friendly horror-story competition with Lord Byron, Shelley’s masterpiece became the foundational spark for modern science fiction. In much the same way, this 100% South African Cabernet Franc is a masterclass in creation—handcrafted with minimal intervention, utilizing natural yeasts, skipping filtration, and undergoing minimal fining in our historic cellar. The result is a wine of unique distinction that truly takes on a life of its own.

Tasting Notes and Sensory Profile

In the glass, the Franc’n Stein 2024 commands attention with a full-bodied, deep dark brick color. The nose is highly aromatic and intricate, opening with a stunning floral lift of blue violets, followed closely by rich layers of black cherry and classic cigar box complexity. True to its Helderberg roots, a delicate whisper of local fynbos and intense cassis emerges as the wine breathes. On the palate, this Cabernet Franc presents a firm, beautifully fresh structure. The mouthfeel is generous yet focused, packed with rounded ripe fruit and beautifully integrated, velvety tannins that provide an elegant backbone without losing any of the variety’s signature brightness.

Food Pairing and Serving Suggestions

To let this complex red wine truly breathe and reveal its aromatic secrets, we recommend decanting it for 30 to 45 minutes and serving it at a cool room temperature (16°C to 18°C). Its fresh acidity and structured profile make it an exceptional match for:

  • Roasted and Grilled Poultry: Spectacular with roast duck breast, rosemary-infused turkey, or grilled quail.
  • Herb-Crusted Meats: Pairs perfectly with a classic crown roast of lamb, venison medallions, or pork loin seasoned with sage and thyme.
  • Savoury Earthy Classics: Complements a rich wild mushroom risotto, truffle pasta, or roasted root vegetables.
  • Artisanal Cheeses: Enjoy a glass alongside a platter of creamy Camembert, aged Gouda, or a mild goat’s milk cheese.
