When exploring the wine collection at Post House Wines, situated in the historic 19th-century Raithby post office homestead between Somerset West and Stellenbosch, you immediately realize that every bottle tells a story. Our estate identity is deeply rooted in the history of international dispatches, postal routes, and famous philatelic misprints.
Among the most captivating and iconic releases in our cellar is Missing Virgin.
More than just a cult favorite among South African red wine enthusiasts, the 2022 vintage of Missing Virgin is a daring showcase of varietal harmony—blending South Africa’s homegrown hero, Pinotage, with the structural intensity of Petit Verdot.
Here is the rich story of the saint, the stamp error, and the unique winemaking alchemy behind this remarkable bottle.
The Philatelic Mystery: The Legend of St. Ursula & The Missing Virgin
To understand the name on the bottle, one must journey back to 1867 in the British Virgin Islands.
The Caribbean archipelago itself was named by Christopher Columbus in 1493 in honor of Saint Ursula—a legendary Romano-British virgin martyr believed to have been slain alongside thousands of virgin companions at Cologne in the early Christian centuries. When Columbus made landfall in the region around her feast day on October 21st, he christened the stunning collection of islands Santa Úrsula y las Once Mil Vírgenes.
Centuries later, in 1867, the British Virgin Islands issued a new 1-shilling postage stamp featuring the image of Saint Ursula flanked by twelve oil lamps.

THE MISSING VIRGIN STAMP AT A GLANCE
============================================================
• THE HISTORICAL FIGURE: St. Ursula, legendary 3rd-5th century British martyr
• THE GEOGRAPHY: BVI, named by Christopher Columbus on her feast day
• THE PRINTING ERROR: 1867 1-shilling stamp printed without the central figure
• THE RESULT: A blank white space where St. Ursula was meant to be
• THE STATUS: One of the world's most famous philatelic misprints
============================================================
During a specific two-color printing press run in London, a sheet of paper was inadvertently fed into the press upside down or passed through without receiving the black central ink plate. The result was a startling printing blunder: the outer borders and lamps were printed in vibrant green, but the central figure of Saint Ursula was completely omitted—leaving a striking blank white silhouette in the middle.
Collectors immediately dubbed it the “Missing Virgin” error, and it became an instant holy grail in international philately.
Uniting Heritage & Varietal Innovation in the Cellar
At Post House, we love celebrating the beauty of the unconventional. Just as that rare 1867 stamp gained global prestige through a daring departure from the norm, our Missing Virgin 2022 is a bold, successful experiment in blending two grapes that are rarely seen together as partners: 85% Pinotage and 15% Petit Verdot.
Pinotage is South Africa’s quintessential homegrown variety, renowned for its juicy dark fruit, rich earthiness, and plush mid-palate flesh. Petit Verdot, on the other hand, is traditionally used in small Bordeaux percentages to impart inky color, floral aromas, and powerful structural muscle.
By bringing them together on our ocean-facing Raithby ridge, we craft a red blend that possesses both the “flesh” for immediate enjoyment and the “muscle” for serious cellar aging.

- On the Nose: A rich, inviting tapestry of aromatics greets you instantly. Primary notes of fresh blueberries, dark plums, and wild heath are layered with Christmas fruit cake, savory wild herbs, and a subtle hint of cinnamon spice. As the wine breathes in the glass, delicate floral lifts of violet, liquorice, and dark chocolate emerge.
- On the Palate: Full-bodied, concentrated, and beautifully structured. The Pinotage delivers a juicy, mouth-filling mid-palate bursting with black fruits and warm spices, while the Petit Verdot provides a firm, fine-grained tannic backbone that grips the palate with precision.
